To The Daily Sun,
For several days now I have been contemplating the wisdom of Don Ewing's July 17 letter to The Sun regarding the dangers and downfalls of a $15/hr wage. I am not only beginning to see the wisdom of his insight, but even ways to improve the lives of low wage earners everywhere!
Don says, “The $15 minimum wage policy ... hurts poor people, especially (the) young, uneducated, unskilled...” Obviously the thing we need to do is to DECREASE the current minimum wage to help all these suffering people even more. With less money, the underemployed would not be able to afford drugs, drive cars (safer for all) or drink. They wouldn't suffer from cell phone addiction, or binge spending on Amazon. They would have to cram more people into their (un)affordable living quarters, increasing social, communication and diversity skills. A win-win for all!
Employers would benefit from decreasing wages, as they would be able to hire more part-time workers, lowering their cost of employee benefits (such as health insurance) and strengthening the corporate bottom line. Many more jobs would become available of the type “that helped/help tens of millions of America's youth and families...”
Yup, it's now obvious that New Hampshire's $7.25/hr minimum wage is actually inflicting suffering on those who receive it. I propose we lower it to $3.25.
Although I do now seriously wonder: Should Don have accepted his last raise, when he knew how much damage such a precedent could pose to society?
