LACONIA — Ginny Sanborn, of Sanborn's Auto Repair, had a rather trying afternoon Wednesday, owing to the misdeeds of telephone scammers.

Her business received more than 100 calls from people who said they were returning her calls, and some weren't happy.

The problem was, Sanborn never made the original calls.

Those who did were running a scam. They would call people and leave messages inquiring about loan payments and Social Security numbers, but the electronic signature on the calls was that of the auto repair shop.

Sanborn thinks her number was picked at random by the scammers in order to mask their true identity.

“It was causing an issue with our business because people couldn't get their calls in,” she said. “It was very strange.”

She called the police and reached out to a software company that may have been unwittingly used in the scam.

By Thursday, the calls had stopped.
