From pool of 4 applicants, council will appoint new Ward 5 councilor Monday

LACONIA — Following Councilor Steven Bogert’s resignation from city council last month, interviews and an appointment to fill the Ward 5 vacancy will take place Monday night.

Julia Nye, Sean Sullivan, Brett Beliveau, and Mark Roy will be interviewed by councilors, concluding with the appointment of one to serve as Ward 5's councilor through Jan. 1, 2028.

Before the meeting, councilors, as well as members from city boards and committees, will gather from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Belknap Mill, for Right-to-Know law training. The training is open to the public.

During the council meeting, councilors will discuss a proposal to designate Prescott and Paugus avenues as permanent emergency lanes, under RSA 231:59-A. This status would not expire, unless reversed by council, or there is an objection from an abutting property owner.

Consideration of an $86,500 award from the Department of Homeland Security Grant Program will also be discussed Monday. The grant would benefit the Laconia Police Department, for the purchase of pole cameras with solar panels and other accessories.

Also on the council’s agenda is a public hearing to accept a $10,000 donation from the Laconia Rotary Club, for irrigation upgrades at Rotary Park.

The council will also look to approve a temporary traffic order for Laconia’s Sept. 11 25th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony. The order states Main Street will be closed to vehicles from its intersection with Hanover Street to its intersection with Church Street, in order to display emergency vehicles for the ceremony, from 7 to 11 a.m. Public works staff will block off the road with cones or other barricades. Police will place a digital sign alerting drivers of the street closure and event at the beginning of Main, detouring drivers to Beacon Street East.

Council will also hear a request for a building permit on a private road at 79 Eastman Shore Road South. The request is for a single-family home with two stories and a basement.

Council meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 10, at City Hall downtown.
