Bogert honored at last city council meeting

LACONIA — Councilor Steve Bogert (Ward 5) was recognized at his last council meeting Monday, ahead of his retirement on Friday, July 31.

During public comment, resident Patrick Wood said, “We often struggle to find people to serve in different positions. But Steve Bogert didn't wait to find out what was going on in this community. He got involved immediately. Served on the zoning board for many years, city council, state representative. So he's the type of citizen we like to have in our community. We may disagree, we may agree, but he's the type of citizen we want. So I wanted to thank Steve for your service.”

Bogert was recognized for his contributions to the city for more than a quarter-century, serving in various roles. Mayor Mike Bordes recognized him for his work, including serving as a member of the board of directors for Laconia Youth Football & Cheer Association, Lakes Region Public Access, Laconia Public Library, New Horizons of the Lakes Region, the zoning board, and as state representative for District 5.

Bordes read aloud a dedication and letter of gratitude for Bogert. “At every chance, Councilor Bogert has demonstrated that public service is about hearing people, listening to everyone’s opinions. We thank him not only for his work on behalf of our community, but also for the example of leadership that has inspired all who have had the privilege of serving alongside him.

“Our sincere wish for happiness goes out to Councilor Bogert as he embarks on this new adventure. Your service has made a meaningful difference that has earned the respect and gratitude of your fellow residents, elected officials, city staff, and volunteers. Always treating them with kindness, respect, and willingness to learn. Thank you, Steve.”

Bogert received standing applause and appreciation from community members.

With an open seat on the council for Ward 5, City Manager Kirk Beattie shared the process for filling the vacancy. Applicants must be registered voters in the city, and residents of Ward 5. The term expires Jan. 1, 2028.

Applications for the position of Ward 5 councilor are due to the City Manager’s Office by 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6. Applicants will be interviewed at the regular council meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 10.
