CONCORD — The Senate Ways and Means last week held a public hearing on SB 57-FN, a bill introduced by Sen. Jeb Bradley (R-Wolfeboro) to phase out the state share of the utility property tax.

“New Hampshire has some of the highest electric costs in the nation," said Bradley in a statement, "and phasing out the utility property tax will be a direct way to provide ratepayer relief. By eliminating the state share of this tax, we protect the municipalities who rely on it for school funding while also protecting the state’s education trust fund.

"At a time when the state is running record budget surpluses," he continued, "it is appropriate for us to return some of that share to the taxpayers. I hope the members of Senate Ways and Means will recommend this bill ought to pass so we can provide $42 million in financial relief for ratepayers across the state.”
