Jeopardy! began a new era on a different platform on March 31 when it premiered its first-ever YouTube edition. The three contestants were stars who have YouTube channels who competed for charity. Who won, and what did the fans think of the spinoff?
The first episode of Jeopardy! YouTube had singer Rebecca Black, drag queen and reality TV star Monet X Change, and comedian Brennan Lee Mulligan. Ken Jennings was the host.
This version is a bit different as it only includes one round of Jeopardy!, interviews, and a Final Jeopardy question for a quick 20-minute episode. Another difference was that Jennings broke the fourth wall and talked to the audience, saying how many clues each contestant got right and their buzzer accuracy.
“Since its founding in 2005, YouTube has become one of the world’s biggest platforms,” Jennings said at the beginning of the episode. “Offering its billions of viewers everything from tutorials, rabbit holes, and deep dives into just about every topic on Earth, to viral videos, to fewer water cooler conversations worldwide.”
The YouTube creators were on a roll answering pop culture and internet-related questions. Black, from Anaheim, California, found the Daily Double on clue 12. She was tied for the lead with Mulligan, from New York City, New York, with $1,600. They both played for The Trevor Project.
Black screamed when she found it and said, “I didn’t want to do that!” She made it a true Daily Double in “The Billion Views Song Club.” The clue read, “This Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee song? More than 8 billion views; The Sesame Street parody ‘El Patito’? Just 16 million or so.”
“What is ‘Despacito’?” she answered correctly, giving her the lead with $3,200. By the first 15 clues, Black led with $3,200. Both Monet, who played for GLAAD, and Mulligan had $2,200.
When Monet correctly answered a clue, he gave a high kick, which Jennings said had never been done before on the Jeopardy! stage. Black squealed when she got answers right and bit her lip when she wasn’t sure.
Mulligan took the lead and had $8,000 by the end of the round. Black had $5,200. Monet, also from New York, was in third place with $2,400.
Mulligan answered 13 clues correctly, the most out of all of the contestants. The category for Final Jeopardy was “Classical Music & YouTube.” The clue was “A part of the finale of ‘Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9’, not the theme from Jaws, begin this song, whose 2016 video features kids singing underwater.” Mulligan stared blankly as he thought of the answer.
Only Monet had the correct response of “What is ‘Baby Shark’?” The Traitors star wagered $2,400, ending him with $4,800. Black didn’t write anything. The “Friday” singer wagered $2,000, leaving her with a total of $3,200.
Mulligan wrote, “What is Trouble?” He wagered $2,401. That left the Dimension20 host with $5,599. Mulligan won the game by less than $1,000.
In addition to being crowned the winner, bragging rights, and charity winnings, Mulligan received a Jeopardy! YouTube milestone plaque.
“One of the most coveted prizes,” Jennings said as he presented it to the comedian.
Fans reacted to the game and contestants. “Whoever thought ‘We gotta get the queer internet nerds invested in Jeopardy! again’ was a genius, no notes,” a YouTube fan wrote.
“I’ve never known all the answers in Jeopardy! before but being chronically online has finally paid off,” another wrote.
“Monet high kick, Rebecca lip bite and smirk, and Brennan staring into the distance doing math.. 10/10,” a third added.
“I really like the stats bit. Though I think someone other than Ken, who is hosting, should be the one to do it so it doesn’t feel too rushed,” one Reddit user said.
Many fans said they wished there were a Double Jeopardy round because it was “too short.”
