Released on February 22, 2024, Season 1 of Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender consists of eight hour-long episodes that adapt Book One from the beloved Nickelodeon animated show.

The story follows Aang (Gordon Cormier), a 12-year-old Air Nomad who discovers he is the Avatar, the only person capable of bending all four elements of fire, air, water, and earth. When the Fire Nation begins an aggressive, century-long war for global domination, Aang suddenly vanishes. A hundred years later, he is discovered frozen in an iceberg by waterbender Katara (Kiawentiio) and her brother Sokka (Ian Ousley) from the Southern Water Tribe.

Their journey to train Aang and to protect the other tribes from the Fire Nation, as well as the stories of their adversaries, make up the story of Season 1. Here is a quick rundown of how Season 1 left the main characters and what you need to remember before diving into Season 2.

How did Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 1 end for Aang?

The season culminates in a massive, two-part finale where the Fire Nation launches an all-out siege against the Northern Water Tribe, and Aang must use his power to defend them.

Aang enters the Avatar State and merges with the Ocean Spirit to become a massive, devastating water monster. Together, they wipe out the Fire Nation fleet at Agna Qel’a to avenge the Moon Spirit, which Admiral Zhao had killed. He single-handedly destroys the entire Fire Nation armada and drives the invaders away. Princess Yue (Amber Midthunder), who was imbued with the Moon Spirit’s life energy as a child, gives up her own life to revive the Moon Spirit, restoring the moon to the sky and returning waterbending to all her people who temporarily lost the skill.

Aang returns to his mortal body, and the Ocean Spirit drags an unrepentant Admiral Zhao (Ken Leung) into the dark depths of the Spirit World.

What about Fire Prince Zuko and his sister, Princess Azula?

Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) is defeated, burned, and forced to flee the Northern Water Tribe in a tiny kayak. Azula (Elizabeth Yu), meanwhile, basks in a major victory as she successfully leads a Fire Nation army to capture Omashu.

What happened with the city of Omashu?

The earthbending city of Omashu fell to the Fire Nation. While Team Avatar is defending the Northern Water Tribe, it turns out that the battle at Agna Qel’a is just a distraction, as Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim) has his sights set on the city within the Earth Kingdom the whole time. Princess Azula (Elizabeth Yu) takes the city, and Aang’s old friend, King Bumi (Utkarsh Ambudkar), is now a prisoner of the Fire Nation.

“That’s a major development in the course of the war. It means that only Ba Sing Se stands [in the way of the] Fire Nation ultimately conquering all of the Earth Kingdom,” showrunner and executive producer Albert Kim told Tudum. “It signals a shift in the power balance of the world and indicates a much bigger threat for the future.”

As revealed in the trailer, Team Avatar will travel to the city of Ba Sing Se to help defend it.

What about Sokka and Katara?

In Season 1, Sokka and Katara leave their Southern Water Tribe village to protect Aang. Katara is a waterbender who develops her skills on her journey while the duo grow as warriors.

He meets Princess Yue of the Northern Water Tribe, and the two form a deep bond, culminating in a tragic sacrifice in the finale when she gives her life to become the new Moon Spirit.

Katara learns waterbending healing but is denied combat training by Master Pakku (A Martinez), who believes women should only be healers. She challenges him to a duel, and although she loses, she proves herself as a warrior.

What is Sozin’s Comet on Avatar: The Last Airbender?

In the mid-credits sequence, the audience gets a peek at Sozin’s Comet, a massive celestial event that passes every 100 years and grants firebenders god-like, once-in-a-lifetime power. Previously, Fire Lord Sozin used this exact power boost to wipe out the Air Nomads, and he plans to use it again against another unsuspecting nation.

In the show’s final scene, Fire Lord Ozai consults with the Great Sage (François Chau), who reveals he has figured out how to predict the comet’s return.
