The Laconia Sachems girls' lacrosse team took home its first NHIAA Division III state championship Wednesday evening, topping Derryfield 12-10. The Sachems entered their first championship game with one blemish on the season. The 6-5 loss came early in the season to defending champion Derryfield School.

Helen Tautkus and Mackenzie Howe helped the Sachems jump out to an early 2-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest. Derryfield did not hesitate to return the favor, scoring the next three goals over a four minute span.

The seesaw battle saw five ties and four lead changes in the first half before Laconia jumped out to an 8-6 lead on a free position goal scored by Becca Howe with three second remaining in the half.

Derryfield (16-1) could not keep up with the Sachems attack in the second half. The Cougars came within two goals with 8:00 left in the game but could not stop Tautkus as she picked up her sixth goal of the game and secured a state title with a minute to go.

Tautkus' six goals led all scorers. Mackenzie Howe and Becca Howe netted three goals apiece for the Sachems.

The Laconia victory was the first for the Sachems in girls lacrosse in their first finals appearance. The team only graduates one senior.
