Mrs. Pauline T. Sherman, 96, of Wolfeboro, died peacefully with family by her side on Oct. 11, 2026, at Mountain View Community in Ossipee.

She was born Feb. 6, 1930, in Northfield, to Joseph and Verna (Barnard) Twombly. She was Raymond High School’s valedictorian, and in 1948, married Alger Sherman, a piano technician and bandleader.

She attended Hesser College, and — following the death of her husband — graduated from the Thompson School for Practical Nursing in 1970. Then she worked at various hospitals or nursing facilities in Florida, Vermont, and New Hampshire. While working at the Laconia State School, she was field director of the newly established Foster Grandparents Project. Ultimately, she was recognized by the U.S. Congress for her leadership in that innovative project.

She enjoyed cooking shows and listening to big band and country music. She expertly performed such crafts as knitting, rug braiding, embroidery, and needlework, and loved reading and horseback riding. She was also a courageous leukemia survivor, having fought off the disease in her late 60s.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Carey, and spouse Rick of Sandwich; and sons David Sherman of Lebanon, Maine, and Andrew Sherman of Barrington. She is also survived by sisters Mrs. Maxine Harden of South Lyons, Michigan, and Mrs. Verna-Jo Carignan of Laconia; sister-in-law Mrs. Marilyn Twombly of Salem; and daughter-in-law Amanda Green and spouse Darnell of Tolleson, Arizona. And she leaves behind six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by sons Brad and Gary Sherman, and her brother, Ralph Twombly.

At Pauline’s request, there will be no memorial service. Her ashes will be spread next spring in a private ceremony.
