Marie Florence Stewart, lovingly known to family and friends as Florence, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026, at the age of 99.

Florence was born on Sept. 30, 1926, in Tilton, the daughter of Rose Anna Mercier St. Louis and Joseph Antonio St. Louis. She attended the French School in Laconia, and later graduated from Laconia High School. It was there that she met the love of her life, Preston “Pret” Stewart. The two became engaged while Pret was serving in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and they were married on May 18, 1946.

In 1954, Florence and Pret settled in Franklin, where Pret established his plumbing and heating business. Florence worked for the telephone company and also handled the bookkeeping for the family business, contributing greatly to its success through her dedication and hard work.

Florence had a lifelong passion for golf. She and Pret were members of Mojalaki Country Club, where she played in the women’s league and competed at the state level. She later joined the league at Den Brae and continued enjoying the game she loved. Golf remained an important part of her life, and she and Pret spent many happy winters playing golf and enjoying their home in Florida.

Above all else, Florence treasured her family. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and played an active role in their lives. Living conveniently between their school and home, she was a constant and loving presence throughout their childhoods. Fifteen years ago, Florence moved to Chesapeake, Virginia, to be closer to family. One of her cherished memories was celebrating her 85th birthday with her daughter Nancy on a special trip to Hawaii. She often spoke fondly of the wonderful life she had lived with treasured friendships, memorable experiences, and the love of her family.

Florence is survived by her daughter Nancy Beaty and her husband Tim of Chesapeake, Virginia; her son Alan Stewart of Tilton; nine grandchildren, Dana DuBois, Douglas DuBois, Lisa DuBois, Jason DuBois, Ryan Beaty, Joshua Beaty, Brittni Stewart, Brady Stewart and Christopher Stewart; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Preston Stewart; her parents, Rose Anna and Joseph St. Louis; and her three brothers, Commander Joseph St. Louis, Raymond St. Louis and Robert St. Louis.

Florence will be remembered for her warmth, devotion to family, strong work ethic, competitive spirit on the golf course, and the kindness she extended to all who knew her. Her life was a blessing, and her memory will remain a source of comfort and inspiration to those she leaves behind.

Interment will take place alongside her husband at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, New Hampshire, on Wednesday, July 29.
