In memory of Elinor Hugh Thorsell — wife, mother, sister, aunt, teacher and advocate for many students, neighbors, and friends.
Elinor and her family moved to Laconia in the early 1970s and became permanent residents. They resided in the “Gingerbread House” on Pleasant Street at the top of Gale Avenue. Elinor taught for many years at Memorial Middle School. There she also coached cross country skiing. She often went above and beyond assisting with off-hour activities. She also taught night classes for New Hampshire College, substitute-taught in Alton and helped out at Kingswood Regional High School where her husband Kevin taught. Many Laconia residents should also remember her cheerful face and helpful assistance at the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and Laconia Public Library, where she often worked.
Following her retirement and subsequent death of her husband, Kevin Thorsell, she moved to Belmont, North Carolina, to be closer to her son, Nathan, and daughter-in-law, Cathy. Elinor was a vibrant person who loved every aspect of life and the world of nature around her.
It is with sadness, but a celebration of her life, that we give the news of her passing on Feb. 12, 2026, due to a progressive illness. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
Elinor leaves behind her son Nathan and his wife Cathy; her daughter Erika, currently serving in the Peace Corps in Guyana, South America; her sister Corella and husband Joe Scott in Grifton, North Carolina; niece Angela and husband Lance Lauziere of Tilton; nephew Gray and wife Jennifer of Grifton, North Carolina; three grand-nephews and two grand-nieces.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local animal or wildlife shelter and preserve in honor of her memory and life.
We are having special services with close family and friends in honor and celebration of her life.
