Town of Sandwich hosts capsule opening during Old Home Week on Aug. 9

SANDWICH — A time capsule filled with a wide variety of items and information reflecting life in 1976 will be opened as part of the 128th Old Home Week in Sandwich.

The capsule was loaded with donations in 1976 by townspeople and guests with items symbolic of that time ranging from photographs, news clippings, town report information and more.

The opening will be held on the Town Green on Main Street, on Aug. 9, from noon to 2 p.m.

This will be among the many cultural and recreational events that will be part of Old Home Week, spanning Aug. 2-9. This week long celebration of everything Sandwich involves all ages and areas of interests with a focus on reconnecting with the past, refreshing connections with friends and neighbors, and learning about the people who keep the community special.

Among the favorites for many is the annual Excursion book, published for decades by the Historical Society, which through the years has captured historic stories of life, agriculture, business, cultural activities and more. Old Home Week is capped off with the annual Excursion — a picnic featuring a historical message.

Another feature will be the Souls of Sandwich Past, to be held at 4 p.m. Aug. 2, where selected characters from years past are “brought back to life” in an interactive program by a team of townspeople, which begins at the Baptist Meetinghouse parking lot, rain or shine.

Other activities include an Open House at the Lower Corner Schoolhouse; Dan Reidy's workshop on 19th century rustic wooden toys; the presentation: “America’s Birth in Stirring Words; Revolutionary War Battles and Poems They Inspired”; and the 5th Annual Collectors Day.
