Sandwich students explore local history

SANDWICH — Sandwich Central School kindergarten through third grade recently visited and Sandwich Historical Society and toured Elisha Marston House and the Quimby Transportation Museum. Students also learned about a variety of antique homes dotted along Main Street in Center Sandwich.

Students observed a diorama of Sandwich Village created by the Quimby School students in 1933. Teachers Sally Johnston and Jennifer Petitti created an assignment to mirror the historical society diorama made nearly 100 years ago. Students researched, planned, photographed and with great detail created similar miniature models of the homes and buildings in Center Sandwich. As part of their social studies competencies, students learned about their community from a historical perspective, and how people work together. 

Sandwich Historical Society Director Jim Mykland said, “A project like this reminds us all of the promise these young students bring to tomorrow and the importance of places like Sandwich Central School, a beacon of enlightenment and learning.”

Mykland uploaded and described the student's work on the Sandwich Historical Society website at sandwichhistorical.org. He has also invited the school to display some of the miniature structures at the Sandwich Historical Society Marston House this summer to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Sandwich Central School.
