LACONIA — Karel Hayes, local artist and beloved children’s book author, is coming to Innisfree Bookshop to sign her new book, “The Bell Box.” She will be appearing at Innisfree Bookshop Meredith on Sunday, Aug. 4, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and Innisfree Bookshop Laconia on Saturday, Aug. 10, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Award winning watercolor artist and illustrator Karel Hayes has participated in solo, juried, and invitational exhibitions throughout the United States. Her paintings have been shown at the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History, the Fine Arts Center in Taos, New Mexico and at the Salmagundi Club in New York City, the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, and the National Arts Club. She has illustrated over 28 books and written and illustrated 12 books — most notably, “The Winter Visitors,” which won three awards, including an IPPY bronze medal for best children’s picture book and “The Summer Visitors,” which was reviewed by the New York Times.
“The Bell Box” is the conclusion to Karel Hayes' Lake Kanakondah trilogy. Beginning with “The Mystery of Lake Kanakondah,” this series follows Alex, a 12-year-old boy, whose family changes their vacation plans. Instead of going to the beach they spend the summer at the mysterious Lake Kanakondah. Alex and his friends soon learn that solving each of the Lake’s mysteries only pulls them deeper into a dangerous adventure. The second book in the series, “The Kingdom of Rattlesnake Mountain,” continues Alex’s story as a menacing presence invades the deep dark waters of the bottomless lake. In “The Bell Box,” the mysterious Mr. Blackendoff appears to tell Alex the story of the bell box, which begins in far off Peru. Soon Alex realizes he must take control to finally unravel the ancient mystery that surrounds Lake Kanakondah. Is he on the right trail or is he making things unimaginably worse?
