NORTHFIELD — Join Hall Memorial Library on Thursday, April 7 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in a virtual workshop where participants will make authentic Korean lotus flower lanterns. Younhee Shin, from the Korean Spirit and Culture Foundation in San Francisco will show how to make the craft and teach participants about Korean culture today.

The lotus flower is a symbol of special significance in Korean Buddhism. The lotus is a beautiful flower that only grows in mud but never gets stained by dirt. Every night it submerges itself in murky river water and every morning it resurfaces to gloriously bloom anew. Workshop leader Younhee Shin likens lighting the lotus flower lantern to “lighting the lamp of one’s mind every day.”

Participants will receive a craft kit to use in creating the lotus flower lantern. Register for this workshop as there are a limited number of kits available. Register online at rebrand.ly/lanternreg, by calling Hall Memorial Library (603) 286-8971, or emailing hallmemoriallibrary@gmail.com.

The craft is suitable for ages 10 and up. Registered participants should pick up their craft kits at the library before the workshop. The Zoom link for the workshop is rebrand.ly/HMLLantern. Patrons can watch from home or can come to the library to view the workshop on the large-screen TV and complete the craft together.
