GILFORD — Fiber arts have been growing for the past several years, and at Ramblin’ Vewe Sheep Farm and in Shepherd’s Hut Market you can join the fun of making wool fiber into something special. Guests will have the chance to learn a bit about the processing of wool to become yarn, a woven item, or a needle felted creation; and you will have the opportunity to try some of these arts for yourself.
On Saturday, Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., guests can meet and learn from some folks who have great joy in the fiber arts. Jeff Keyser will be shearing a few sheep, and the wool will be skirted for use. This is the beginning process of using the wool. Members of the Belknap Mill Fiber Group will be participating in demonstrations.
Joyce Keyser, owner of Shepherd’s Hut Market, will be in the store demonstrating carding and drum carding clean Targhee wool. In the barn there will be demonstrations of spinning wool using a drop spindle or a spinning wheel. Jo-An Balassone Fowler, Ellen Gellotte and Toni Neil will show how spinning is done. Neil will be also be demonstrating how the process of dying wool is done. Her husband, Al Neil, will be showing you how to weave; there will be an opportunity to try weaving and spinning. Janice Courtoise has been felting for two years and will be demonstrating felting and showing some of her creations. There will be an opportunity to try needle felting either in the barn or in the store.
In Shepherd’s Hut Market you will find Targhee wool, felting supplies, books on the felting arts, and a number of felting kits available for sale. This is also a great time to check out some handspun yarns, 100% wool yarn, wool blankets made with wool from here, and maple syrup, lamb and other wonderful products.
Ramblin’ Vewe Sheep Farm and in Shepherd’s Hut Market are located at 637 Morrill Street in Gilford. This event has many things to do besides fiber arts — rides on the hay wagon, petting zoo, getting a pumpkin, a scavenger hunt for the children, and the Lakes Region Witches will be performing. There will be other activities as well; educational and fun.
