To The Daily Sun,

Imagine walking into the Laconia Public Library only to find fewer books, no internet access, and canceled children’s programs. This isn’t a distant possibility — it’s happening now. A federal order has quietly erased funding for libraries and museums with no public debate.

This decision puts the Laconia Public Library at risk, an institution that circulates over 130,000 books annually, and provides free internet access to families without broadband. It is also home to essential literacy programs that prepare children for school success.

In 2024, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) awarded $266.7 million, including $211 million for libraries. These funds sustain key programs in New Hampshire:

  • Interlibrary Loans: IMLS-funded networks loaned over 2,190 books statewide in 2024, ensuring smaller libraries like Laconia’s can offer diverse materials
  • Digital access: The NH Downloadable Book Program serves 1.36 million residents, including many in Belknap County

Laconia’s library is more than books — it’s a community hub. Nationwide, over 50% of library users earn under $50,000 annually, relying on free job-search tools, computers, and learning resources. Meanwhile, libraries generate $4.64 for every $1 spent, fueling workforce development and small businesses. Cutting IMLS isn’t just cultural neglect — it’s economic sabotage.

What readers can do:

Call Sen. Jeanne Shaheen at 603-647-7500 and Sen. Maggie Hassan at 603-622-2204.

Call Rep. Chris Pappas (NH-1) at 603-285-4300 and Rep. Annie Kuster (NH-2) at 603-226-1002.

Support Friends of the Library, spread the word, and demand IMLS funding be restored.

Laconia deserves a strong, well-funded library. But if we don’t act now, future generations may never experience the resources we’ve come to rely on. Libraries protect our past and build our future — it’s time to fight for them.
