To The Daily Sun,
I am writing to express Lakes Region Community Services' support for the Home Possible Project being proposed for Gilford.
LRCS provides various services to individuals in the greater Lakes Region from birth through the lifespan. Amongst those services are community and residential support to individuals experiencing an intellectual, developmental disability or acquired brain disorder. Our organization was founded with a strong family-driven ethos, and nearly 50 years later, it continues to be guided by a commitment to meeting the evolving needs of those we serve. Our goals emphasize both individual and family empowerment, aiming to normalize full community inclusion for everyone, while also implementing various service models ourselves.
The Home Possible Project is an exemplary one, bringing families together to support their loved ones’ hopes and dreams for safe, affordable housing in the communities they grew up in. Those behind Home Possible felt a need, found a solution, and are executing it, with their mission to: “create and provide residential options, services, and support designed to meet the needs of adults with developmental disabilities and similar disabling conditions.” Adults experiencing a disability, or neurodivergence, have the same desire for independence as any other adult, and in particular, our young adults are looking for a way to move out on their own when they are leaving high school. There are few independent options in the greater Lakes Region, and all too often, our young adults experiencing disabilities must stay at home well into adulthood. The supportive housing model allows independent living, with support for success, and is a growing trend around the country that we are excited to see taking off here.
Lakes Region Community Services currently serves over 30 individuals in the Town of Gilford, and we would encourage support of the Home Possible Project.
