To The Daily Sun,

My name is Mark Lewandoski and I am running for selectboard in the Town of Belmont.

I came to Belmont in 1977, and in 1978 I was sworn in as a full-time police officer. I proudly served this community until February 2025, finishing the last 15 years of my career as police chief. During that time, I developed and managed department budgets, participated in numerous contract negotiations, and gained extensive knowledge of labor laws and municipal operations.

I believe responsible government begins with responsible budgeting. Budgets must be built on needs first, with wants considered only when they are affordable and manageable. I have always taken a conservative approach when building budgets and the same careful approach when spending them. Fiscal discipline is essential if we are going to protect services while keeping Belmont’s tax rate under control.

Belmont is fortunate to have outstanding municipal employees. Our fire department, police department, highway department, and town hall staff work extremely hard for this community every day. Protecting those services while managing taxpayer dollars responsibly must remain a priority.

Looking ahead, one of Belmont’s biggest challenges will be infrastructure. Expanding water and sewer along the Route 140 and Route 106 corridors will be critical if we want to attract responsible commercial and light industrial growth. These projects are far too costly for local taxpayers alone, which is why we must work closely with our state legislators and aggressively pursue federal and state grant opportunities.

Belmont has been my home for nearly five decades. I have dedicated my career to serving Belmont. I am prepared to bring that same commitment, experience, and fiscal responsibility to the Board of Selectmen, and I respectfully ask for your vote on March 10.
