To The Daily Sun,

Citizens from Sandwich, Center Harbor and Meredith publicly told the New Hampshire GOP majority state Legislature that they are unhappy with the state’s Education Freedom Account voucher program.

They passed a warrant article at the annual Inter-Lakes School District meeting demanding more accountability on how the projected $110 million will be spent over the next two years. They want a return to vouchers for needy families only and not the new open program in which any family, no matter their income, is eligible. The super-rich now can send their children, subsidized by our tax dollars, to schools the rest of us can’t afford or on expensive ski vacations under the ruse of an educational experience. The citizens’ warrant also warns that the new vouchers for all program increases “pressure on local property taxes.”

Unfortunately, this citizen plea is unlikely to make a difference to the GOP legislature majority. Citizens overwhelmingly have been publicly advocating at Statehouse hearings for our public schools, which the GOP majority continues hell bent on destroying.

If readers' value public education then look at the voting records of their local Statehouse and senate representatives. If they consistently voted against public schools and for subsidizes for rich families, then vote them out of office in November. That’s the best and probably only way to keeping our local public schools healthy now and into the future.
