To The Daily Sun,
I support HB 155: Indigenous People's Day.
Christopher Columbus was a great explorer. His daring feats to find a new world are something that can be admired. His ability to lead and chart a course into unknown waters inspires people today. And that should be neither ignored nor belittled.
But the First Nation People who have lived on this Turtle Island, now named America, have not fared well because of this discovery and the resulting genocide through disease and domination.
Oct. 11 is a day to recognize why this nation moved forward. For that reason, to recognize the Indigenous People instead of Christopher Columbus brings a better recognition to those to whom this wonderful state can show its gratitude.
