To The Daily Sun,
Our nation is experiencing a crisis in education nationally. We are graduating students who can't read, who are not adequate in math, with many having no or defective moral compasses. We have school shootings nationwide, drug addiction running rampant, and no matter how much money we throw at this issue, it doesn't improve. It is a systemic problem. I'm 75 years old. I remember a much different school system; one in which the many problems of today were the exception, not the rule.
I'm a Christian; I have been for 50 years now. As a Christian, I need to own the mistakes we, the Church, have made. We have allowed our God and Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who had been treated with honor and respect by past American generations, to be thrown out of the public sphere. In a nation in which we have been guaranteed religious freedom, we have allowed ourselves to be pushed out of the public sphere as long as we could worship in our cushy churches. We've allowed our schools, the places where we train our future citizens, to be places where praying, Scripture reading, and speaking the name of Jesus has become anathema. Our past generations have been blessed and protected because we had honored that name. We knew and respected His story. Not everyone received Him as their Lord and Savior, but most knew and respected His name and His story. Our Supreme Court got it wrong in the 1960s. We as a nation have suffered for it.
I'm running for school board in Ward 1 in Franklin to do my part to give our young people that opportunity again. What an individual does with that knowledge is up to them, but everyone should hear it. If we do that, we will be a blessed nation again.
