Hopefully you are done with your taxes for this year. Filing your taxes is an example of the US government helping businesses at the expense of the US taxpayers. Instead the IRS should do the work for us and cut out the middleman.
Now we do the work (collecting paperwork, entering data), spend money (tax prep or software) and suffer anxiety (is it right?) just so we can pay our taxes.
Our current tax-filing process benefits only the tax preparation and software companies. Turbo Tax makes so much money from US tax filers that they can afford to run ads for the Super Bowl.
The IRS already knows what most of us owe or are due in a refund. They receive all the same forms we do. People who itemize, business-owners and the 1% will need to do additional work.
The IRS should simply send us a report stating, "Here is the information we received from your employer(s), banks, social security, medicare and investment firms. Based on this information we calculate that you owe this much or will get this much in a refund. Please make any necessary changes with this form or enter them online at IRS.gov." Japan does this for their people now.
Instead we get a test. The IRS says, "Here are 100 complicated forms. Fill them out, hire someone to do it for you or buy some software that will help you. If you make a mistake we’ll audit you and/or charge you a penalty." We panic and hire tax help or buy software.
Tax filing is a cruel, unnecessary, costly, and time-consuming requirement for 99% of Americans.
It needs to stop now. Tell your senators and representatives that we want the IRS to do our taxes for us.

A great reason why I support switching from a Personal income tax system to a value added tax system (VAT). 120 countries have VAT in place.
No more forms to fill out and no more loopholes.
