Hunter Taylor: Up to voters to mark 'no' for incoherence, 'yes' to Harris-Walz

Being 82, I am acutely aware of the effects of aging on memory, my own and that of other older adults. In recent months I became particularly concerned about the diminished capabilities of our presidential candidates.

President Joe Biden has a long list of accomplishments during his tenure to date, and history will judge him and his administration kindly. His poor performance at the debate with Mr. Donald Trump, however, combined with evidence of some physical frailty, raised serious questions about the advisability of his reelection campaign. Former Vice President Mike Pence expressed it well when he thanked Mr. Biden for putting country above self when the president withdrew from the race and endorsed Kamala Harris.

The remaining elderly candidate, however, is showing repeated instances of not only aging and forgetfulness, but total incoherence and bizarre behavior. The mainstream press has tended to gloss over Trump's more outrageous comments, perhaps as simply more of the same, only more so. How can the rest of us ignore it, however, when the unintelligible and disjointed ramblings take us further and further afield?

Forgetting the Hannibal Lector references and the weird comments, here is part of a Trump speech in New Hampshire: "We're also going to place strong protections to stop banks and regulators from trying to debank [sic] you from your political beliefs. What they do, they want to debank you. And we are going to debank, think of this. They want to take away your rights. That want to take away your country, the things you're doing. All electric cars. Give me a break..."

Unfortunately, Trump's handlers and enablers seem too intimidated by his reputation for vengefulness to help him ease away gracefully for the sake of the country.

It's up to the rest of us to vote "no" to this incoherence and "yes" to Harris-Walz.
