Charles Bradley: President Donald Trump should just let Texas be Texas

Ken Paxton, current Texas attorney general, is a candidate for the Texas U.S. Senate seat held by John Cornyn. Although the run-off primary election is in May, the mainstream media’s coverage has been monumental. After 20 years, Cornyn has no accomplishments except enriching himself.

Let’s compare Ken Paxton’s program with John Cornyn’s.

Paxton announced he would drop out of the Senate race if John Thune and Cornyn would pass the SAVE Act, which allows only Americans to vote in federal elections. Attorney General Paxton also said if the Republican establishment fought as hard for the SAVE Act as they do for Cornyn, who spent $100 million only to be rejected by 60% of Texas GOP primary voters, the SAVE Act would be the law now.

After Cornyn spent that $100 million, Thune encouraged Trump to endorse Cornyn to save money. That is unparalleled chutzpah.

Sen. Cornyn has never been a Trump supporter, much less a Trump loyalist. Cornyn said Trump could not win the 2024 election and time had passed Trump by. Cornyn’s Communications Director and Senior Advisor Matt Mackowiak has a history of vicious anti-Trump tweets and media quotes (The National Pulse, Friday, March 6, 2026). Thune is responsible for stonewalling Trump’s nominees (American Thinker, Shawn Fleetwood Sept. 3, 2025). Cornyn and Thune have an anti-Trump track record in the Senate (The Federalist, Jordan Boyd, March 5, 2026).

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is a profile in courage. Cornyn and Thune are Republirats: Demolitioncrats in Republican disguise. Please President Donald Trump, get this one right. Let Texas be Texas.

PS: Politics being politics, I suppose, invoking the art of the deal, POTUS may endorse Cornyn if Thune puts the SAVE Act on Trump’s desk to save America. In that case, if Paxton loses, Trump will appoint him as United States AG.
