MEREDITH CENTER — A group of local residents concerned about veteran homelessness in the Granite State is holding an informational event on Sunday.

Selectboard members Jeanie Forrester, Mike Pelczar and Lynn Leighton — along with their respective spouses Keith Forrester, Betsey Pelczar and Brad Leighton — are promoting the event, focused on supporting veterans and ending veteran homelessness. The event flyer states “ending veteran homelessness is within reach in the Lakes Region.”

Forrester said Wednesday a presentation will be made by Harbor Care, a nonprofit organization that helps Granite Staters by providing veteran services, as well as healthcare and housing for those in need. The organization states on its website its goal is to make sure people can live “safe, stable and health lives with purpose and dignity.”

Forrester said Harbor Care provides these vital services to veterans, and she asked the Leightons and the Pelczars to co-host the event.

“Basically, we’ve invited people from the Lakes Region to come learn about the homeless issue for veterans in the Lakes Region, and what Harbor Care is doing to end homelessness,” Forrester said.

Forrester said Harbor Care works statewide, and she has a good friend on staff there, who has spoken highly about the work they do. It is their goal to connect with the people of the Lakes Region to fill them in on their endeavors. Forrester said an executive with the organization will be on hand to speak to those who attend.

Forrester admits she doesn’t know all the details of veteran homelessness in the Lakes Region, and she is curious to hear what will be discussed. While it may not be as prevalent locally as it is in Manchester, and other heavily populated areas, she knows it is an issue near and dear to people regardless of location.

“I think, generally, veterans who are homeless is an issue that is important to everyone,” she said.

This will be a “casual meet-and-greet” event, where people can hear the presentation from Harbor Care, ask questions, and find out how they can get involved and help the cause.

“It should be a good informational session specifically about veteran issues,” Forrester said. “And it will be open to the public.”

The event takes place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18, at the Wicwas Lake Grange, located at 150 Meredith Center Road. Light refreshments will be provided.

Forrester said nobody will be turned away, but asks for those attending to RSVP by contacting her at jlf41358@gmail.com.
