CANCEL CULTURE
How does Cancel Culture relate to the Digital Public Square?
Cancel Culture, as I understand it, seems to crucify a person or group for something they said or have done at the time or years ago. The misdeed come backs to haunt them although they have changed their mind or apologized for the action. They have changed their opinion or behavior. Example: Governor Andrew Cuomo has been charged with sexual harassment. This could damage his political career.
The Digital Public Square attempts to bridge the divide that exists in this country be it political, racial, or religion to name a few. Local, state and national issues are involved. We see regularly the Daily Sun letters to the editor demonstrate the anger, defensiveness, and disrespect to other opinions.
This has added to the divide that we are experiencing today. Many people act on their gut feelings, without thinking. We have seen this with January 6th, the insurrection against the Capitol. The mob were “true believers,” unable to think for themselves who tended toward group mentality. Many were dependent on a leader which incited them to break into the Capitol including the violence that was evident.
Culture Cancelling focuses on a diversionary tactic. It removes us from the real issues so that we do not focus on the core problems that exists.
Perhaps recognizing this issue will help the DPS participants focus on the immediate issues.
