James J. Doherty, 94

James J. Doherty, of Laconia, passed away peacefully with his wife Bonnie by his side on July 29, 2026, at the age of 94 years.

He was born in White Plains, New York, to Michael and Mary Doherty. He is survived by his wife Bonnie; brother Raymond (Claudia); sister Anne Marie Basher (Tom); sister-in-law Carol Doherty; stepdaughters Kathy Thomas and Julie Jordan (Donald); many nieces, nephews and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Robert and sister Eileen Roche.

Jim served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Afterwards he returned home and graduated from Iona College, New Rochelle, New York. After and during college he worked for the U.S. Post Office until he was hired by Norden Systems, a division of United Technologies in Norwalk, Connecticut, for 35 years.

Jim and Bonnie retired in 1994, and moved to Bridgewater, on the shores of Newfound Lake. In 2013, they moved to the Taylor Community in Laconia. They were extensive travelers and visited more than 100 countries, all seven continents with Antarctica being the most interesting. They were both avid skiers and traveled as far as Switzerland, and most of the Western U.S. ski areas.

Jim always found time to volunteer. In Norwalk, Connecticut, he was a member of the mentor program for young children; in Plymouth, he volunteered at the Plymouth Senior Center, the Friends of the Arts, and the Chamber of Commerce. He was also a strong supporter to the local theaters — The Barnstormers Theatre, Jean’s Playhouse, The Winnipesaukee Playhouse and Interlakes Summer Theatre.

Jim had a great sense of humor and enjoyed being a member of the ROMEO Club. He will be missed.

Burial will take place at the New Hampshire Veteran’s Cemetery.
