MEREDITH — The Loft at Hermit Woods will mark International Jazz Day on Thursday, April 30 with a special performance by the Jonathan Lorentz Group, honoring the global art form that unites cultures through rhythm, improvisation, and dialogue.

Established by UNESCO in 2011 and led by legendary pianist Herbie Hancock, International Jazz Day recognizes jazz’s role in promoting peace, cultural understanding, freedom of expression, and human dignity worldwide. As the culmination of Jazz Appreciation Month, April 30 is celebrated across the globe — and this year, right here in Meredith.

Tenor saxophonist Jonathan “Lockjaw” Lorentz leads a powerhouse quintet featuring Jason Palmer (trumpet), Tom Robinson (piano), Brendan Dowd (upright bass), and Tim Gilmore (drums). Expect fun hard-bop energy, blues-infused originals, and fearless improvisation — music that thrives in an intimate listening room.

Dr. Lorentz, a PhD graduate of NYU and longtime champion of New Hampshire’s live jazz scene, has earned international acclaim for his album Borderlands and praise from jazz greats including NEA Jazz Master Dave Liebman.

Hermit Woods is located at 72 Main St. in Meredith. A complimentary wine tasting runs from 5:30 to 6 p.m., dinner is available from 6 to 7 p.m., and the show begins at 7 p.m.
