LACONIA — Death is a natural part of life but is often uncomfortable to talk or think about. A Death Café is a gathering of people who are curious to learn more about death and the dying process. Participants gather in a facilitated group while enjoying coffee, tea, and light refreshments, and are given the opportunity to ask questions and have conversations that may normally feel taboo. The discussion is facilitated by someone with professional experience such as a Licensed Death Doula or medical professional. A Death Café is not a grief support group. Questions that arise may include:
- How does one talk to their spouse or children about their death plans?
- How does one plan a funeral?
- What is the process of writing an obituary?
- What is hospice?
Laconia Public Library will host a Death Café on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. The gathering will be facilitated by Ruth O’Hara, retired RN and Certified Death Doula, and Carol Wallace, Reiki Master and teacher.
