The driver of a small earth-moving skidder was injured Friday afternoon when the machine he was operating slid down an embankment on Route 3 across the highway from Northeast Tire in Belmont. The 70-year-old man from Gilford was taken by ambulance to Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia for a minor head injury, according to Belmont Police. The tractor stopped just short of rolling into heavy traffic, and vehicles were backed up for nearly an hour while rescuers pulled the man from the machine. The skidder was heavily damaged, said police, but coworkers were able to drive it to a storage area. Heavy rain is considered a contributing factor in this accident. Police say loose soil affected the traction when he got too close to the slope. Police ask anyone with information on the incident to call them at 267-8351. (Roger Amsden/Laconia Daily Sun)
