To The Daily Sun,

It was a shock to read that the Gilford School Board had voted to have masks be optional for students, faculty and staff of the Gilford Public Schools. It does not seem reasonable nor safe.

Yes, I have grandchildren in Gilford High. COVID-19 cases are rising and many illnesses are very serious. We even expect that booster shots will be needed in the Fall.

Remember, no child under the age of 12 has been vaccinated. A generous guess would be that 50 percent of the middle and high school students have had complete vaccinations. Many students also go home to adults who are not vaccinated. We have no idea which teachers and staff are vaccinated. In my view, they should not be at the school if unvaccinated.

I respectfully ask that the Gilford School Board reconvene before Sept. 7 to review the earlier decision. Don't wait for sick children before reconsidering. A temporary decision to make masks a requirement until Christmas break is better than a sick child.

Let the School District know how you feel. Their phone is 603-527-9215.
