Specialty tours at Castle in the Clouds

This summer, visitors can explore details that set the Lucknow mansion apart on one-hour, guided Castle Close-Up tours. The series began in June with an architecture tour, focused on the home’s construction, influences, and Arts and Crafts design. The next tour, scheduled for Tuesday, July 23, at 6 p.m., focuses on the home’s amenities and mechanical systems that ran Lucknow in 1914. These technologies include a central vacuum, fire suppression system, ammonia-brine refrigeration system, and house-wide inter-phone system, all of which were rare and advanced conveniences to have in that era. The third and final tour is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 6 p.m., and focuses on the mansion’s furnishings, both original and replicated. Lucknow’s original owners the Plants filled their home with a collection of handcrafted, American-made pieces of furniture and art. During the tour, participants will learn how these pieces are a key component of the Arts and Crafts movement, and what they tell about the Plants’ lifestyle, tastes and personalities. Limited tickets for Castle Close-Up tours are $22 for members and $25 for nonmembers, available by visiting castleintheclouds.org or over the phone at 603-476-5410. Each tour goes up two flights of stairs and is not ADA compliant. Castle Close-Up tours are sponsored by Christopher P. Williams Architects, PLLC. (Courtesy photo)
