NORTHFIELD — Ten-year-old Ben Gloddy and his family will travel to Las Vegas this month so he can compete in the first-ever Superprestigio of the Americas motocross race to be run in conjunction with the final round of the AMA Pro Flat Track series. Ben is the youngest of 10 children in the U.S. who were selected to race in the American Supercamp and Motion Pro Superprestigio Youth Invitational.

“I am very excited that I was selected to race at this event. It is the first time it is being held in the U.S. so it’s pretty cool that I get to be a part of it,” said Ben.

Born during Laconia Motorcycle Week in 2005, it seemed almost inevitable that Ben would develop a love for motorcycles. At just a few months old, his “Papa”, John Ganong of Laconia, would sit him on his Harley in the driveway and together they would twist the throttle. At the age of 4, Ben was surprised with his first dirt bike; a 2003 Honda XR 50. Riding on two wheels came very natural to him. His first race was in May of 2010 at Wachusett Valley Riders Club in Winchendon, Mass. and he finished in first place.

To date, Ben has gone onto win multiple flat-track championships in New England and New York, as well as a supermoto championship in Maine and many runner-up and third-place finishes in both events. Currently, he flat-track races a 2005 Honda CR 85.

In 2010, Ben began attending American Supercamp, a motorcycle riding and racing training technique school. Initially, he attended the camps once a year, traveling to Colorado for training. He now attends twice a year in Delaware, once in the spring and then again in the fall. This past April, at the age of 9, he was asked to be a guest instructor. It was quite an honor and he gladly accepted.

“It is amazing how much you can learn about yourself when you are teaching others.” Ben said.

Ben has many local businesses that have helped to get him to get where he is. Without their generous support, he wouldn’t be able to follow his dream to race motorcycles. The list includes Dietz & Watson/D’Andrea Foods, Looney Bin Bar & Grill, BodyCovers, A&B Locksmith, RTT Construction, Nothin’ Fancy, Mark’s Adrenaline Motorsports, Kevin Day Home Improvements, JC Tinting, Jake’s Trucking, Mitchell’s Fresh Salsa, KM Cheney Concrete, No Limits Motorsports, 22photos.net, Hawthorne Automotive, Ken Partridge Construction, Bazzaz, American Supercamp, Klutch Industries, Creamer Racing 64, Shane Narbonne.
