LACONIA — Mark Baldwin grew up in Gilford, learning to play golf at Pheasant Ridge and Laconia Country Club. Baldwin quickly became one of the state’s best junior golfers, winning the state Junior Championship three straight years. Additionally, he won the New England Junior Championship and his 7-under par 65 was one of the lowest rounds ever recorded in the Men’s NH Amateur Championship when he was just 18 years old. After graduating from high school in 2002, Baldwin went on to play golf on a scholarship at the University of Notre Dame, where he continued to work hard on his game and there he became one of the best college golfers in the country. After college, Baldwin realized his childhood dream and turned professional. He has traveled the world playing golf on the PGA Tour in China, Latin America and Canada. In 2017 Baldwin achieved his best finish yet by securing his playing privileges for the 2018 PGA Web.com Tour in North America where he started the year at a tournament in the Bahamas and just played another tour event in Mexico this past month.
“So many members at Laconia Country Club have fond memories of Mark as a kid playing our club,” said Ken Currier, LCC president. “Mark was either beating up on all the men at the club or spending endless hours on the range and practice putting green, always courteous, always respectful and so much fun to watch play.”
“One of Laconia Country Club’s missions is to promote junior golf in the Lakes Region, as a sport for a lifetime and one that teaches honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance and honesty,” said Charlie Wheeler, LCC general manager. “We couldn’t be more excited to announce one of our own, who exemplifies these characteristics and has gone on to the heights of professional golf, to be our own PGA Professional Golfer Ambassador. Mark will be recognized with this honor to our members, and we will follow his results on our website. When he’s in town, he’ll have full playing and practice privileges at our club.”
Last week in Mexico, Baldwin had this to share: “I am very honored with this Professional Golfing Ambassador title at Laconia Country Club and I would like to thank the members for this recognition. I have so many great memories of the club growing up in Gilford, from the fantastic golf course to the support I received as a junior golfer. I was also fortunate to be able to learn and play with one of the best golfers to ever come out of New Hampshire, Dan Wilkins, and I learned a great deal from Todd Rollins, then Assistant, now head pro at LCC. When I’m in town I also look forward to hosting some golf clinics for juniors who have an interest in the game.”
Baldwin’s junior golf clinics will be announced as his schedule permits and will be announced as they happen.
