Fifth grade student Benjamin Gilbert of New Hampton, right, son of Michael and Jessica Gilbert, was top speller at the New Hampton Community School Spelling Bee on Jan. 24. Fourth grader Hunter LaRoche, left, son of Ben and Jamie LaRoche, placed second. The bee was a contest between the top two finishers in first through fifth grade classrooms. Benjamin will compete in the state preliminary round of the Scripp’s National Spelling Bee on March 7 at the Silver Center for the Arts at Plymouth State University. Nearly 200 of the state's top spellers will attend. The state winner will be eligible to compete at the Scripp’s National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in May. The NHCS bee was judged by community members Theo Denoncour, Christine Hunewell, and Jodi Acheson, sponsored by the NHCS Parent Teacher Organization, and facilitated by NHCS faculty. (Courtesy photo)
