LACONIA — Mayor Ed Engler, who has been in California since September for treatment of colon cancer, says he hopes to return in early January in time for the first City Council meeting of the year.
Newly elected councilors Mark Haynes and Bruce Cheney will be seated at the meeting on Jan. 8.
Engler has been undergoing chemotherapy following surgery for colon cancer on Sept. 29 at the University of California-Irvine Medical Center. Surgeons removed a malignant tumor.
He plans to continue his six-month course of chemotherapy when he returns to New Hampshire.
Under the city charter, the City Council may fill vacancies in the office of councilor or mayor, when necessary.
No vacancy has been declared in this case. Engler has remained in contact with city officials while in California.
