GILFORD — With temperatures plunging, Gunstock Mountain Resort made snow for the first time on Wednesday night, and General Manager Greg Goddard said they will continue doing so every day the temperature gets below freezing.
The county-owned ski area has scheduled a Dec. 1 opening, and Goddard said, “I wouldn’t imagine opening any earlier than that, but when we do open, it will be with plenty of good terrain.”
Friday’s high temperature is projected to remain below the freezing mark, and overnight temperatures will be low through Tuesday, allowing nighttime snowmaking even when the daytime temperatures rise above 32 degrees.
Cannon Mountain has reported snowmaking operations on Middle Cannon, Bypass, and the Links, and said they expect to make good progress in laying a base before their projected opening date of Nov. 24.
As for the real stuff, long-term forecasts call for snow or a rain-snow mixture on the week of Nov. 20.
