City makes request for special election

LACONIA — The City Council has requested a special election to replace state Rep. Don Flanders, R-Laconia, who died last month.
Gov. Chris Sununu and his Executive Council will consider the City Council's request when they meet on Oct. 25. Approval at that meeting would set up a candidate filing period from Oct. 30 to Nov. 3.
The primary election would be Jan. 9 and the general election would be Feb. 27. If there is only one candidate from each party, the Jan. 9 vote would determine Flanders' replacement.
Flanders, who died Sept. 28 at age 82, represented Belknap District 3 since 2000.
He served on the House Commerce Committee, which oversees the banking, insurance and securities industries and the New Hampshire Liquor Commission.
At the City Council meeting Tuesday, City Manager Scott Myers suggested that the council act quickly to seek an election as the new legislative session begins in January.
