2 Inter-Lakes sophomores compete in decathlon

Evan Candage and Ryan Nickerson, sophomores at Inter-Lakes High School, participated at the 58th NH Decathlon at Nashua South High School on June 21-22. The Decathlon is a grueling event where the athletes compete in ten events during a two day meet. The first day of the meet consists of 5 events: the 100 meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and the 400 meter dash. The second day consists of the 100 meter high hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and the 1500 meter run. Seventy-five NH athletes competed for points that were awarded based on the International Amateur Athletic Federation Scoring Tables. Candage excelled in the long jump with a leap of 20 foot 6 inches, which took the 2nd spot in that event. Nickerson's overall performance was steady and consistent, a very important aspect of being a decathlete. He placed 36th overall. It was a great 2 days for both, especially considering that it was their first time competing in some of the events. It was also a great learning experience, showing them what they can attain personally and where they line up with the rest of the state's athletes. "It was a real pleasure working with Evan and Ryan this year," said Coach Steve Jurius, "I look forward to the next two years with these young men." (Courtesy photo)
