GILFORD — Gilford High softball team improved their record to 6-2 Wednesday by beating Lakes Region rival Laconia 5-4 on eight hits including 4 doubles. Gilford got on the scoreboard quickly in the bottom of the first inning when Mollie Dignan and Caitlin Houston led off with back to back doubles. Gilford scored one more in the second inning when Mikaela Mattice led off with a double and scored on a Jordan Dean single. Gilford held a slim 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the 5th inning when the Gilford bats exploded for three more runs on 3 hits, 1 sacrifice and 1 walk. Brid Fillion led off with a single and advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Mollie Dignan. Lisa Osborne walked and Sarah Lachapelle launched a two run double to make the score 4-0. Courtesy runner Kristina Hayden went in to run for Lachapelle and Hayden scored on a Maggie Fillion single which proved to be the game winning hit.
Laconia scored one run in the top of the 6th and three runs in the top of the 7th to make the game close at 5-4. In the top of the 7th after scoring 3 runs, Laconia had runners in scoring position with the tying run on 2nd and the go ahead run on 1st with 2 outs. Laconia's Miner hit the ball hard between 3rd and short stop and Gilford's 3rd baseman, Lisa Osborne, dove out toward shortstop to make a great scoop on the grounder and stop the ball from leaving the infield and then Osborne turned and dove back at 3rd base to end the game on a force out.
Sarah Lachapelle was the winning pitcher striking out a career high 11 batters, walking 3 and giving up 8 hits. Gilford combined for 8 hits. Sarah Lachapelle led the offensive attack going 2 for 2 with 2 doubles, 3 RBIs and one sacrifice fly, Mikaela Mattice I double, Caitlin Houston 1 double, and singles by Maggie Fillion (1 RBI), Mollie Dignan, Jordan Dean and Brid Fillion.
Gilford's next game is Friday at Prospect Mtn.
