The Laconia Ice Arena is hosting the inaugural Indoor Pond Hockey tournament April 4 through 6. The event will raise funds for the Laconia-Winnisquam Wolfpack high school hockey team.
Will Fay, arena manager, is excited for the first puck to drop. "We are expecting a strong turn-out, and hope for the event to be a great success for everyone involved," says Fay. "Frankly, we are borrowing from some of the success of Scott Crowder's Pond Hockey Classic held on Lake Winnipesaukee in Meredith. The big difference here, is we are climate controlled, and don't need to rely on Mother Nature. We are re-creating the feel and bringing outdoors in," Fay added.
This year's tournament will be sponsored and operated by the Laconia-Winnisquam Wolfpack High School Hockey Boosters. Led by Walt Cammack and Kelly Dyer, the boosters are expecting around 100 players (20 teams). The tournament will feature an "open" division for players 18 and over, and a "vintage" division for players age 35 and over. The Wolfpack players recently volunteered their time at the Pond Hockey Classic in Meredith, leaving them well prepared to take on the 3 on 3 pond hockey tournament at Laconia Ice Arena.
Fay says the indoor tournament is designed to be a family friendly event. In the future he hopes it will include a youth division, as well as more players from outside the area.
Entry fees are $275 per team before March 1st, 2014 after which time the fee increases to $300.
There will be a maximum amount of teams allowed to enter. Each team is guaranteed 4 games for seeding followed by a single elimination playoff tournament on Sunday. Games will be played cross ice 3 vs 3, without goalies or on ice officials. All players will receive a welcome packet and t-shirt from the Wolf pack boosters. The winning teams in each bracket will receive a prestigious ice shovel trophy.
Proceeds from the event will go to support the Laconia Winnisquam Wolf pack High School Hockey Boosters. More information, and team registrations, can be found at www.laconiaicearena.com.
