The Laconia Middle School girls' basketball team split a pair of games last week.
Laconia rode the strength of a strong second quarter to a 25-23 victory in a Jan. 15 match against Gilford. Leading scorers were Amelia Clairmont with 13, Devon Mello with 9, Bella Smith with 8 and Delia Cormier with six. Gilford trailed by just two points after the first quarter, but Laconia shot ahead in the second, scoring 16 points to Gilford's 1. Laconia's full court defense resulted in steals and scoring opportunities.
On Jan. 17, Laconia again went into half-time with a lead but opponents from Merrimack Valley turned the game around in the third quarter, out-scoring the Sachems 20 to 9 in that period of play. Merrimack Valley protected the lead in the fourth quarter for a 45-38 win. Laconia coach Chick Tautkus was very proud of his players as they fought hard the whole game and displayed a lot of hustle. Leading rebounders for Laconia were Emma Schumacher with 8 and Lindsey Drouin with 7. Delaney Ross played excellent defense for Laconia.
Laconia plays Bow on Wednesday and Barnstead on Thursday at home this week. Both games start at 4 p.m.
