The Winnisquam Regional High School girls' basketball team used a big 4th quarter surge (21-7) to overcome a 12 point deficit and defeat Gilford 43-41 on Monday. Gilford jumped out to a 15-11 lead after the first quarter and extended their lead to 27-17 at the break. Both defenses stepped up in the 3rd quarter as the Eagles outscored the Bears 7-5 to take a 34-22 lead at the end of 3. The 4th quarter was all Bears as they forced multiple turnovers and converted easy layups to grab the lead they would not relinquish with 4 minutes to go. Gilford was sent to the foul line but missed 8 free throws down the stretch and finished 8 for 17 from the charity stripe on the night.
For the Winnisquam Bears Hannah Chapin scored 10 points including 8 in the 4th quarter, Tea Michalski also added 10 points. For Gilford Kayla Orton had a career high 15 points to go along with 14 rebounds. Cassidy Bartlett Followed with 13 points. Stevie Orton also added 5 for Gilford.
Gilford's record falls to 5-3 with the loss, while Winnisquam improves to 3-5.
