Richard A. Miller, 83

GILFORD — Richard Allan Miller, 83, of 235 Chestnut Drive, died at the Laconia Rehabilitation Center, Laconia on Sunday, March 30, 2014.
Mr. Miller was born May 31, 1930 in Irvington, N.J., the son of Claus J. and Mildred A. (Rowley) Miller. He resided in New Jersey for a number of years and graduated from Nutley High School in Nutley, N.J.. He attended Nichols Jr. College, Fairleigh Dickinson University and Newark Technical College. He served as a Fire Control Technician in the U. S. Navy aboard the USS Bauer (DC-26) and the USS Shea (DM-30).
Mr. Miller moved from Jefferson Township, N.J. to Gilford, N.H. twenty-eight years ago. He had been employed at Wickes Lumber for twenty-two years, retiring in 1988.
Mr. Miller was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Gilford and a ten year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Port S. Lucie, Fla. He was a member of the American Legion Wilkins-Smith Post #1 and the Lakes Region Singers. He enjoyed singing in the church choirs and with the Lakes Region Singers. Richard was a loyal veteran and a proud American.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Marilyn (Messer) Miller, of Gilford; a son, Scott A. Miller of Marshalls Creek, Penn.; a daughter, Cindy S. Pollard, of Jefferson Township, N.J.; two grandchildren, Erin Miller of Marshalls Creek, Penn. and Ashley Miller of Raleigh, N.C. and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Miller was predeceased by a son, Craig R. Miller and by a brother, Claus F. Miller.
There will be no calling hours.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, April 4, 2014 at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 18 Wesley Way, Gilford, N.H.
Burial will be at a later date at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen, N.H.

David P. Lake, 62

GILMANTON — David Peter Lake, 62, of 38 Varney Road, in Gilmanton Iron Works, died on Saturday, March 29, 2014, in his home after a long illness.

David was born March 20, 1952 in Boston, the son of the late Francis and Joan (Phelps) Lake. He served in the Army, Marine Corps, and the Coast Guard.

David resided in Rochester for several years before moving to Gilmanton Iron Works 17 years ago. He was employed as a Public Health Scientist and Health Physicist with the State of New Hampshire for 16 years, retiring in May 2010.

David was a member of the Gilmanton Community Church, the Farmington Fish & Game, the NRA, the Gilmanton Militia and the Dump Run Gang. He enjoyed music, fishing, hunting and karate.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Twila M. Kenna of Gilmanton Iron Works; two kids, Tilly and Jake; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Francis and Cecila Lake of Worcester, Mass., Thomas and Denise Lake of West Boylston, Mass., and James and Linda Lake of Lowell, Mass; three nieces; and one nephew.

In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by his kids, Samantha, Ally, Wysh and Clyde.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 4, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Wilkinson-Beane-Simoneau-Paquette Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia, using the Carriage House entrance.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the Gilmanton Community Church, 1807 NH Route 140, Gilmanton Iron Works, with the Rev. Christopher Stevens, pastor, officiating. Burial will be held in the spring in the family lot at Smith Meetinghouse Cemetery, Gilmanton.

Walter J. Laws, 61

NORTHFIELD — Walter John Laws, 61, a resident of Northfield for eight years, died at his home following a period of failing health.

Walter was born in Boston, Oct. 26, 1952, son of the late Walter E. and Marie (Arsenault) Laws. He had resided in Bristol for many years before moving to Northfield. Prior to his retirement Walter worked as a truck driver for various construction companies and retail consumer companies.

Walter enjoyed the outdoors and camping. He enjoyed time spent with family, especially his grandchildren. Over the years his pastimes included, tinkering with autos and enjoying his animals. He was a pool player and member of a local downtown league.

Walter's family includes, his daughter, Karen A. Hanser of Sanbornton; sons, William J. Laws of Windham

Brian M. Laws of Bristol, and Walter J. Laws II of Bedford; eight grandchildren; his former wife, and mother of his children, Margaret Laws of Bristol; a brother, Richard Laws of Hull, Mass.; a sister, Joan Dickerson of Quincy, Mass.; two nieces and two nephews.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, April 5, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road in Tilton. A celebration of life will follow the calling hours at the Greenside Restaurant at Lochmere Country Club, 360 Laconia Road, Tilton. Burial will be at a later date.

Robert W. Caswell, 81

LACONIA — Robert W. Caswell, 81, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 5, 2014, at his daughter's home in Troy, N.Y.

Robert was born April 3, 1932, to the late Richard W. Caswell and Doris (Gravenhorst) Caswell in Hackensack, N.J., and was the beloved husband of the late Mary Lamont Caswell who died in June 1996.

Robert was a civil engineer, graduating from the University of Rhode Island in 1954, and was a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honorary Society. Subsequent to receiving an ROTC commission, Robert entered the Army Corps of Engineers, serving two years active duty. Licensed as a professional engineer in 13 states, Mr. Caswell was employed as a civil engineer, environmental engineer, project manager and executive for several consulting engineering firms in the United States and abroad. Accompanied by family, he lived in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia for more than 12 years, working on major water supply, wastewater, power plant and building projects.

Robert was a member of several professional organizations including the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Water Works Association and the New England Water Works Association.

Bob enjoyed skiing, photography, sailing and traveling. In his early 70s, to his family's surprise, he developed a passion for dancing, took lessons and enjoyed dance showcases and ballroom dance-theme cruises.

Survivors include his son, Eric A. Caswell (Lauren) of Northfield, Vt.; his daughter Jennifer L. Nixon (William) of Troy, N.Y.; grandsons Elliot and Beckham Caswell of Northfield, Vt.; granddaughters Kathryn Nixon of Rochester, N.Y., and Victoria Nixon of Troy, N.Y.; sister Susan P. Caswell of Wood River Junction, R.I.; brother Jonathan H. Caswell (Pearl) of Laconia, N.H.; niece Becca; and nephews Brad, Chris, Alan and Caleb.

A memorial dance will be held in Bob's honor on April 26, 2014, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Let's Dance Studio, 5 North Main St., Concord, NH 03301. Arrangements by the McLoughlin & Mason Funeral Home, corner of 109th Street and Third Avenue, Lansingburgh.
