GILMANTON — John F. O'Hare, 80, formerly of Lynn and Swampscott, Mass., died on Friday March 28, in Vitas Hospice in Miami Florida after a brief illness. He was the husband of Julia (Doyle) O'Hare originally of Salem, Mass. Born in Lynn, Mass., he was the son of the late John and Jeanie (McLaughlin) O'Hare. A graduate of St. Mary's Boys High School (Class of 1950), he received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Education from Salem State College. He was a resident of Lynn, Swampscott and most recently Gilmanton, N.H.
A proud veteran, he served in the Army during the Korean War, was a teacher at Pickering Junior High School in Lynn for 40 years, and was active in many causes. He served as the Inspector of Weights and Measures in Swampscott, and was a member of the Swampscott Housing Authority for over 20 years each. He founded and ran a citywide bowling program for Junior High students in Lynn for many years, and was an expert softball umpire in great demand in South Florida, and New Hampshire.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters Nancy Cumming of Groveland, Mass., Kelly Gardner and her husband John of Berlin, Mass. and a son James O'Hare of New York City. He also leaves his grandchildren, Emily and Thane Cumming, their father Rocky Cumming, granddaughters Grace and Molly Gardner and several nieces and nephews, and many cousins in Scotland. He was the brother of the late Catherine Smith and Gregory O'Hare.
Visitation will be on Friday, April 11, 2014 from 5 to 9 p.m. at SOLIMINE FUNERAL HOME, 67 Ocean Street (Rte 1A) Lynn, Mass. His funeral mass will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 10 a.m. at St. James Church, Federal Street, Salem, Mass. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Lynn, Mass.
