Elwood 'Al' Shaw, 93

MEREDITH — Elwood (Al) Shaw, 93, of Center Harbor, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Forestview Manor in Meredith. He was the beloved husband of the late Greta L. (Sykes) Shaw to whom he was married for 62 years.

Born in Plaistow on September 15, 1920, he was the son of the late Leon and Bertha (Beal) Shaw. He attended schools in Plaistow and Haverhill, Mass., and graduated from Haverhill High School.

Elwood lived in Plaistow until 1986 when he moved to Center Harbor. The majority of his life's work was as an executive for Consolidated National Shoe in Lawrence, Mass. He also served as a selectman in Plaistow from 1963-1966.

Elwood will be best remembered for his love and devotion to the care of his wife, Greta. He took a great interest in the Center Harbor community and town meetings. He loved eating at local restaurants and meeting friends at McDonald's for morning coffee. He took daily drives in his car (many times a day) through Center Harbor, Meredith and Moultonborough and was quick to start a conversation with those he met. At the end of the conversation, you were no longer a stranger but a friend. One of Elwood's greatest joys was the time he spent with his granddaughter, Sarah.

With eternal gratitude the family thanks the staff at Central NH VNA and Hospice and Foresview Manor for the excellent and compassionate care given to Elwood.

Elwood is survived by his daughter, Pamela Shaw of Newburyport, Mass.; son, Michael Shaw and his wife, Lisa, of Meredith; sister, Alma (Shaw) Belcher of Brentwood; granddaughter, Sarah Shaw of Newburyport, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements: Friends are invited to an informal time of remembrance and fellowship with the family on Saturday, April 12, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., Parish Hall, Center Harbor Congregational Church, 52 Main St., Center Harbor, NH. With respect to Elwood's wishes, a graveside service will be private.
