LACONIA — A city man is being held in jail on $1,000 cash bail after allegedly head-butting his girlfriend and causing her to fall on to the bassinet where one of her new-born twins was sleeping.

Police said the head butt caused his girlfriend to fall on top of the bassinet that was on the couch. One of the babies, who are four-weeks old, was in the bassinet while the other was on the couch.

Police affidavits said Caleb D. Robertson, 18, of 65 Gilford Ave. Apt. 2 was arguing with his girlfriend when he allegedly swiped a lamp causing it to fall to the floor and shatter.

Police said he then “aggressively” swiped everything off of the coffee table. Responding police officers said they noticed the broken lamp and the living room appeared to be in disarray.

Responding officers also said the bassinet appeared crushed in a manner consistent with someone falling on top of it.

Robertson’s girlfriend had a bump on her forehead although police said Robertson denied head butting her. He allegedly admitted to breaking the lamp and knocking the things off from the coffee table.

One of the twins was taken by the child’s grandmother to Lakes Region General Hospital and, after the mother signed a medial release form, investigating officers said the infant had suffered minor injuries including an abrasion.

Police said the woman told them her babies were four-weeks old and had been born at least one week early. Affidavits said Robertson told them he knew the babies were in the bassinet on the couch and that he and his girlfriend had their argument in the same room.

In addition to $1,000 cash-only bail, Judge Jim Carroll ordered Robertson held on $5,000 personal recognizance bail.

Robertson is facing one count of misdemeanor reckless conduct and one count of simple assault. Police continue to investigate and say additional charges could be forthcoming.
