Wild animal training demonstration at Squam Science Center on Oct. 4

HOLDERNESS — Adults and children can learn how wild animals are trained when the Squam Lakes Science Center holds a demonstration on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Presenters will explain how and why are the animals trained at the Science Center. They will also talk about how hard it is to teach an animal, and the types of behaviors the animals are taught. Participants can observe exhibit trail animals during a training session, learn about the process, and then try their luck at shaping behaviors of other participants, and then finally assist in a training session with a program animal.

This program is for adults and children age 8 and older.

The cost for the program is $7 for Science Center members, $9 for non-members, and $10 on the day of the event.

Contestants & charities announced for Lakes Region Dancing with the Stars, to be held on Nov. 14

MEREDITH — Lakes Region Dancing with Stars is back! The next charity show will be Friday, November 14, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at the Interlakes Community Auditorium located at 1 Laker Lane.

This year’s cast and charities are: Kathleen Burke-Tech Integrator for the Inter-Lakes School District will be dancing for The Cure Starts Now Cancer Foundation in memory of John Bradley Thompson. Don Crowell of the Epilepsy Foundation of New England dancing for the Epilepsy Foundation of New England, Dan Fife dancing for the Boys and Girls Club of the Lakes Region, Molly King the Program Director of 98.3 LNH dancing for the LNH Children's Auction, Chris McCarthey owner of the Insurance Outlet in Laconia dancing for the Laconia Santa Fund, Gina McGuire local author dancing for the NH Humane Society, Rob Nedeau the Deputy Sheriff of Belknap County dancing for the Greater Meredith Career Partnership Fund, Brooke Wakefield of the Circle Program dancing for the Circle Program.

This community fundraiser was started in February 2011 by Laura Brusseau and Ashley Halsey, two local women who wanted to use their talents to raise awareness and funds for local non profits. In the last four shows over $30,000 has been donated to local charities including- Habitat for Humanity, New Beginnings, LNH Children’s Auction, Winnipesaukee Playhouse, Hands Across the Table, American Cancer Society NH Branch, Bikers Against Child Abuse, Greater Lakes Region Child Advocacy Center, The Santa Fund, Got Lunch Laconia, Happy Tails Dog Park, Keeping You, Me and Memories Alive, Interlakes High School Student In Need Fund, Community Care Givers, Annie UpFund, Meredith Emergency Food Pantry, Voices Against Violence, The Salvation Army, The Hunter School, The Fallen Fire Fighters Fund, Got Lunch Meredith, and the Elm Street Playground Fund.

Wolfeboro Friends of Music hosting April Verch

WOLFEBORO — Fiddler, step dancer, singer-song writer April Verch will lead her group in the next live performance presented by the Wolfeboro Friends of Music on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Anderson Hall at Brewster Academy, 205 South Main St.

Verch and band blend the traditions of roots music and step-dancing. The band is rounded out by bassist and clawhammer banjo player Cody Walters, and guitarist Hayes Griffin.

The finale of the program will feature Verch fiddling and step dancing — and often executing two entirely different intricate rhythmic patterns — at once.

Speare Oncology Team hosting Art of Healing Painting Party on October 9

PLYMOUTH — Family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, maybe even you—we all know someone who has been diagnosed with cancer. For many it is being embraced by love, support and encouraging words that help them through their journey.

It is in the spirit of that shared experience that you are invited to join our Oncology Team for an Art of Healing Painting Party on Thursday, October 9, 6:30 p.m., at Kil'n Time Art Studio in Plymouth. Coming together as a community you will be able to remember, to share experiences and provide hope on canvas. The cost to attend is $10 per painter. Space is limited and advance registration and payment is required. Reserve your spot by calling Kil'n Time Art Studio directly at (603) 238-9147.

Each artist will complete an artist statement that will be displayed with their painting at one of several area businesses in our central New Hampshire communities, at Speare Memorial Hospital or Speare Memorial at Boulder Point throughout the month of October. Paintings will be returned/available for pick-up by participating artists on November 3.
