TILTON — Maria Daneault, a 2014 graduate of Winnisquam Regional High School, was elected to the position of State President in the Granite State Association of FFA. In this position, Daneault will lead over 500 students of agricultural education in leadership development during the coming year.
Daneault is currently a student at NHTI and previously held the position of FFA State Secretary. In addition to Daneault, twenty-two Winnisquam FFA Members represented the Winnisquam Agricultural Center at the 85th Annual Convention of the Granite State Association of FFA. The event was held March 26–28 at the Mt. Washington Resort, with students from ten New Hampshire agricultural education programs in attendance.
FFA members spent three days competing in Career Development Events (CDEs), participating in leadership workshops and attending awards sessions. Several Winnisquam Agricultural Center students were recognized for their work in agriculture. Iris LaRochelle and Ryan Brown placed first in their categories, with recognition also going to Tyler Swain, Kirsten Frender and Brenna Audet. Cheyenne DeHart earned her State FFA Degree.
Winnisquam teams competed in various events, with the Parliamentary Procedure group taking first place state-wide. The team consisted of Sierra Laughy, Grace Weingartner, Iris LaRochelle, Adam Spaulding, Brenna Audet and Kirsten Frender. Capturing third place was the Ag Sales team of Roy Wells, Cianna Carey, MacKinley Goldthwaite and Autumn Chaffee, with Chaffee earning first individually. Dan McCall also competed in the event and placed fourth.
In the Job Interview CDE, Swain was first in the junior division, with Josh Dow placing second and Cianna Carey third in the sophomore category. Animal Welfare Display competitors Chaffee and Frender placed third and fourth respectively, while Deanna Fogarty was third in Demonstration. Also receiving awards, in the Impromptu Speaking contest, were Audet and Connie Lacasse (first and second place in the freshman/sophomore division) and Billy Chavanelle (first among juniors & seniors).
Special features of the event included guest speaker Dr. Drew Conroy of UNH, a presentation by Wildlife Encounters of Rochester, NH and leadership development workshops by National FFA Secretary Victoria Maloch. All twenty-three Winnisquam participants took advantage of this outstanding opportunity to meet like-minded students from across the state, develop their leadership skills and expand their horizons.
